Laboratory testing, commonly referred to as just lab testing, is a diagnostic procedure to determine the health of a patient. Typically included in these tests are blood work, urine samples, and body tissues. After getting the results, doctors analyze the data to determine if anything is wrong with the patient. These tests are highly accurate, and can diagnose a whole host of conditions and illnesses. At Franklin Primary Care, we pride ourselves in our diverse ability to treat a variety of illnesses and conditions, and this includes being able to diagnose them! Come in today to see how we can help you!

What are laboratory tests?

Lab tests and diagnostic procedures are tests used to determine if a patient’s health is normal. For example, a lab can test a sample of your body tissue, blood or urine to see if something is wrong. If there are abnormalities, further testing is required.

Lab tests are critical tools in helping healthcare providers understand what is happening in your body. The information gathered can help confirm the cause of health concerns or rule out any potential concerns.

Lab tests may be ordered in response to you sharing concerns or symptoms with your healthcare provider. They may also be ordered to establish a baseline for your health, monitor your health, or as part of an overall wellness program.

How do you get lab work done?

Blood for testing is gathered from:

• Capillary skin puncture (finger stick)
• Dried blood samples
• Blood drawn from an artery
• Blood drawn from a vein (most common)
• Bone marrow aspiration

After the blood is drawn, it is then analyzed in a lab. The blood is put into a centrifuge and spun until it separates. Lab values vary for each person and must be assessed relative to other factors. While reference ranges are established after testing a large number of healthy people, everyone is slightly different. Blood analyses vary based on:

• Time of year
• Posture/positioning
• Food/fluid intake
• Stress
• Medication/supplement use
• Alcohol
• Smoking
• Exercise/physical activity
• General tests

What lab services do you offer?

At Franklin Primary Care, we offer several different lab services, including:

Rapid Lab Tests and Screenings — We use rapid tests to determine if a patient has influenza (the flu), mononucleosis virus (mono), or streptococcus bacteria (strep throat). A throat swab or blood sample will be tested on site and be ready in minutes.

Bloodwork — Also known as blood testing, these tests are run to determine the contents of the blood, and consequently the health of our bodies. We provide tests based on your current and past medical history and also by request. We use both internal and well known external labs for fast and accurate results.

X-Rays — We provide digital X-Rays, both on-site and off-site, which can determine exactly what is going on with your injury and if you need to be seen by a specialist.

EKG — We also provide resting EKGs (electrocardiograms). This test checks and measures the heartbeat, providing information about the heart rhythm and abnormalities. Occasionally, further tests are needed to ensure the structure and electrical system of the heart are in proper working condition, and our EKGs can determine if that is necessary.
