In order to get blood work done, in the vast majority of cases, it must be ordered by a physician. This can be either a regular primary care physician or a physician from an urgent care center. After they have established that a blood test is required for the diagnostic process, they will give the patient a blood work form that indicates the type of tests needed and what exactly they will be looking for in these tests. Although this may be performed in-office, in some cases the patient will need to go to a laboratory services clinic that regularly performs these tests. The actual procedure does not take very long and involves drawing a sample of blood (typically from the forearm) and testing it in their lab.
The time it takes to see results varies per test and clinic. Results turnaround also largely depends on patient and test volume as well as the number of staff onsite. For many common tests, including complete blood count, basic metabolic panel and lipid panel, lab results will be sent to the ordering physician within 24 hours. For more intricate tests such as a complete metabolic panel, the results are usually available within one to three days.
